(Saarthak & Nishtha sold chocolates...)

Now, the same riddle in English...

Special Note: If you succeed in solving this one, well and good; but in case, you don't, just leave a comment, and I will mail the answer to you...

The school, in which my kids Saarthak and Nishtha study, organised the annual fete, and my kids ran a stall there to sell chocolates...

To run the stall, they bought a total of 40 packets of two types of chocolates - 'E' (expensive) type chocolates costed them Rupees 150 per packet, and the 'C' (cheap) type chocolates Rupees 90 par packet...

They mixed all the chocolates, and made 40 packets again, and sold them at Rupees 180 per packet...

And when all the chocolate packets got sold, they made a profit of 33.33 per cent...

Can you guys tell me, how many packets of each type they had bought initially...?

(Let's play the Tower of Hanoi...)

(Kids toured the IVRI zoo...)

Now, the same riddle in English...

Special Note: If you succeed in solving this one, well and good; but in case, you don't, just leave a comment, and I will mail the answer to you...

During winter vacations, I visited a veterinary researcher friend of mine in Bareilly's IVRI (Indian Veterinary Research Institute), where the kids - Saarthak, Jigyaasa, Ambar, Nishtha and Samagra - were given a tour of the little zoo they have...

Kids enjoyed that thoroughly, and when they came back, the youngest Samagra told me, "Bade Papa, we have seen three types of animals in the zoo... Bees had six legs each, spiders had eight legs each, and mice had four legs each..."

I said smiling, "Oh... That means you have got to see a lot of animals there..."

Samagra smiled, and said, "Yes, and the zoo has the same number of each of these animals, so, can you tell us, how many animals we have seen in total, if I tell you that we had counted 612 legs...?"

I took only a few seconds to tell him the number, but now, can you guys tell me the right answer...?

(Olympics for deaf & dumbs...)

Now, the same riddle in English...

Special Note: If you succeed in solving this one, well and good; but in case, you don't, just leave a comment, and I will mail the answer to you...

It was in the year 1965, when five countries - United States of America (USA), Republic of South Africa (SA), Republic of China, United Kingdom (UK), and Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) - sent 15 players each, to the 'Olympics for deafs and dumbs'...

The players competed in five sports, and each of the country sent five players for one of the sports, four players for the second, three for the third, two for the fourth, and only one player for the fifth sporting event...

No country sent the same number of players for any particular sport...

And yes, the countries had to pay the 'arrangements fee' to the organisers, and no two sports had the same fee charges...

For the athletics competitions, the organisers charged US Dollars 1,800 for each player participating in the sport... Likewise, for shooting, the fee was US Dollars 2,925 each player; for weight lifting, the fee was US Dollars 3,300; for swimming, US Dollars 4,350; and for gymnastics, the fee was US Dollars 4,800...
  • The country who paid US Dollars 48,225 as fee, sent five players to participate in athletics competitions, and three gymnasts...
  • Republic of China paid the least fee, and that was US Dollars 12,450 less than Republic of South Africa (SA)...
  • United States of America (USA) paid US Dollars 9,000 for their players for athletics competitions, and US Dollars 11,625 for their swimmers and shooters combined...
  • United Kingdom (UK) sent two shooters, and paid US Dollars 33,900 for their swimmers and weight lifters combined...
  • Republic of South Africa (SA) paid the largest amount as fee, and they sent five swimmers, four gymnasts, and one player for athletics competitions...
  • Republic of China sent three weight lifters, five shooters and one swimmer...
  • The country who won the most medals, sent only one weight lifter, and paid a total of US Dollars 55,650 as fee, that was US Dollars 7,425 more than United States of America (USA)...
Now, can you guys tell me, how many players each of the countries sent for each sport, and how much they paid as the fee... And yes, which country won the most number of medals...?

(Four cousins took exams...)

(Nine thieves stole 81 buffaloes...)

Now, the same riddle in English...

Note: This riddle is sent to me by Shri Yogendra K. Rathaur, a reader of http://www.VivekRastogi.com, his email ID is ykr_73@rediffmail.com, and he lives in Kashipur (Uttarakhand)...

Special Note: If you succeed in solving this one, well and good; but in case, you don't, just leave a comment, and I will mail the answer to you...

A group of nine thieves stole 81 buffaloes, all of which were marked with a number between 1 to 81 on their foreheads... When they started distributing the buffaloes equally among them, they faced a peculiar problem... The number on the forehead of a buffalo meant that the buffalo gives as many litres of milk per day... That is, the buffalo with number 31 gives 31 litres of milk every day, number 10 gives 10 litres, and number 81 gives 81 litres...

So, distribution of any nine buffaloes will not be an equal distribution...

Can you guys help the thieves, so that not only they get nine buffaloes each, but equal milk too...?

(I dream of riddles...)

Now, the same riddle in English...

Special Note: If you succeed in solving this one, well and good; but in case, you don't, just leave a comment, and I will mail the answer to you...

I saw a dream last night, in which I was talking to a team of engineers working with Indian Railways, and they told me, "Vivek ji, we have developed a revolutionary train engine, which can run on saline (solution of distilled water and Sodium Chloride - Salt)...

I congratulated all of them, and they told me another good thing about it, "Vivek ji, not only this engine will save a lot of fuel or electricity, but it can run at a very fast speed too..."

I immediately asked, "How fast...?"

They said, "Vivek ji, we tested it on a goods train last week, and the engine could pull the entire train at the speed of 126 kilometers per hour..."

I congratulated them once again, and then their team-leader asked me smiling, "May I ask you a riddle, as I have heard that you are very fond of them...?"

I too smiled, and said, "Yes... You may..."

He then asked me, "During the test run, the train at the speed of 126 kilometers, entered a tunnel... It took the train 309 seconds to pass through the tunnel completely, and by the way, it took it only 27 seconds to enter the tunnel completely... Now, you tell us the length of the train and the tunnel..."

I calculated in my mind for a few seconds, but before I could tell the team-leader my answer, an engineer poured a jug of water at my head, as they were in a celebration mood... And I was awake...

Now, as you know, I could not get a chance to answer, but I am giving you a chance, so, please answer as soon as you can...

(How long did it take to eat chocolates...?)

Now, the same riddle in English...

Special Note: If you succeed in solving this one, well and good; but in case, you don't, just leave a comment, and I will mail the answer to you...

Like me, my son Saarthak, daughter Nishtha, niece Jigyaasa, and Nephew Ambar are very fond of eating chocolates...

One fine day, all four of them sat with me to watch their favourite animation movie 'Toy Story', and we kept a big box, full of chocolates...

And yes, all five of us can consume chocolates at a different pace, so, I am going to tell you about it...

I eat 11 chocolates in 20 minutes, while Saarthak takes 30 minutes to consume the same number of chocolates, Jigyaasa eats 21 chocolates in 45 minutes, Nishtha eats three chocolates in 12 minutes, and Ambar finishes two chocolates in 10 minutes...

Now, you guys tell me, if we had a total of 275 chocolates in our box, how long will it take for us to finish the box...?

(From English alphabets to Mathematics, once again...)

As requested by a few of my friends and colleagues, am putting a few of very easy ones...

Now, the same riddle in English...

Special Note: If you succeed in solving this one, well and good; but in case, you don't, just leave a comment, and I will mail the answer to you...

This time, I associated a digit to each of the first six alphabets of English (ABCDEF), and then multiplied the six-digit number by two, three, four, five, and six... I got a six-digit answer every time, and surprisingly, the same alphabets (or say digits) appear in all the answers, but, they were rotated every time... So now, you guys tell me, what values did I put to each of the alphabet...

Now, the same riddle in English...

Special Note: If you succeed in solving this one, well and good; but in case, you don't, just leave a comment, and I will mail the answer to you...

I have associated a digit to each of the first four alphabets of English (ABCD), and then multiplied the four-digit number by four... I got the same alphabets in my answer, but, in the reverse order... So now, you guys tell me, what values did I put to each of the alphabet...

Now, the same riddle in English...

During the summer vacations, when my cousin's son Utkarsh visited my place to have fun with his cousins (my and my brother's kids - Saarthak, Nishtha, Jigyaasa and Ambar), they decided to race with each other, like they always do...

Each of the kids raced with each other only once, and they decided that the winner of the each race will get four points, the loser will get none...

But in case, if there's a tie between the two runners, they will divide the points equally...

I noted their points down on a piece of paper, and it looked like following...
Saarthak - 12, Jigyaasa - 10, Utkarsh - 8, Nishtha - 4, Ambar - ?

Now, can you guys tell me, how many points did Ambar score...?

(Opened an FD in bank...)

Now, the same riddle in English...

This riddle was sent by a user, of my website NDTVKhabar.com, Shri Rakesh Ranjan... Shri Ranjan lives in Hajipur (Bihar), and his email ID is ranjan2rakesh@gmail.com

Special Note: If you succeed in solving this one, well and good; but in case, you don't, just leave a comment, and I will mail the answer to you...

I once went to bank to open an Fixed Deposit (FD) account, and the amount I gave to the clerk only had Rupees 100 notes, and the Rupee one coins...

After a few years, when I encashed that FD, the clerk gave me as many Rupees 100 notes as I gave him the Rupee one coins, and as many Rupee one coins as I gave him the Rupees 100 notes at the time of opening the FD...

I hired an autorickshaw to reach home, and gave a Rupees 100 note to auto-driver, and he returned 50 Rupee one coins...

When inside home, I counted the notes and coins, and was surprised to find that I have exactly double notes and double coins, if compared to the number of notes and coins, I deposited at the time of opening the FD...

Now, can you guys tell me, how many Rupees 100 notes, and Rupee one coins did I deposit in the bank initially...?

(Friends tested my skills...)

Now, the same riddle in English...

Special Note: If you succeed in solving this one, well and good; but in case, you don't, just leave a comment, and I will mail the answer to you...

I once visited an old friend of mine, Prashant, and his wife Mudra, who were busy teaching their son Tathagat...

While were sipping the tea, and recalling the old days, suddenly Tathagat threw a question at his mother, "How old are you, Mummy...?"

Mudra replied, "OK... Good that you have asked it... Now, I will make it a mathematical exercise for you... Listen son, the ages of your dad, yours and mine add up to exactly 70 years..."

Tathagat then said, "Oh my God... 70 is a big figure... Anyways, Papa, you please tell me, how old are you...?"

Now Prashant said smiling, "I am just six times as old as you are, sonny..."

Tathagat got confused with these big-figured statements, and asked, "Papa, will I ever be half as old as you...?"

Prashant said, "Yes Tathagat, and at that time, the ages of your mom, yours and mine will add up to exactly double as they are today..."

Tathagat, naturally, got very confused, and went to sleep immediately, but Prashant and Mudra threw the challenge at me, "Will you be able to solve this, Vivek...?"

I smiled, and said, "I was sure about it to happen, the moment you started it with Tathagat... I always knew that you can never ask Tathagat such a question at his tender age... The challenge was actually for me from the beginning... Anyways, I will try solving it, but you guys tell me if the ages are whole numbers only, or are there months involved...?"

Mudra said, "You got it right, Vivek... By the way, the answer includes both years and months..."

It took me almost 10-15 minutes, before I could throw the right answer at them...

And now, I challenge you all, to solve it in lesser time...
