एक दिन, मैंने और मेरी पत्नी हेमा ने उनसे अपने मित्रों को रात के खाने पर बुलाने के लिए कहा, ताकि हम भी उनसे मिल सकें...

प्रत्येक बच्चे ने अपने दो-दो मित्रों को न्योता दिया, और इत्तफाक से प्रत्येक के मित्रों में से एक तैराकी टीम का साथी था, और दूसरा रोलर स्केटिंग टीम का...

भोजन के दौरान जब हमने बच्चों से अपने मित्रों का परिचय देने के लिए कहा, तो सभी के चेहरों पर शरारती मुस्कान उभर आई...

मैं अपने तजुर्बे से तुरंत भांप गया कि अब ये लोग मेरी परीक्षा लेने वाले हैं...

Three of the kids in my family - Samagra, Saarthak, & Nishtha - are members of the teams of Swimming and Roller Skating, in their school, and they talk a lot about their teammates at home...

One fine day, I and my wife Hema asked the kids to invite their teammates over to our place for dinner, so that we can also meet them...

Each of the kids invited two of his or her friends, and incidentally, each one of them received one friend from the swimming team, and the other from the roller skating team...

During the dinner, we asked them to introduce their friends to us, all of them smiled mischievously...

I immediately understood from my past experience, that they are going to throw a test for me now...

Saarthak said, "Papa, all of our friends are going to tell you about themselves, but you will have to tell us that who is in which team of which of your child... But remember one thing that from these guys, swimmers never lie, and roller skaters never tell a truth..."

Then the friends started...

• The six parents awarded were - Rohit, Shivangi, the parent of Falguni, the parent of Chitra, the parent of Chhavi, and the parent who stood second in the contest; but not necessarily in the same order...
• The names of the daughters of the parents, who stood fifth and sixth, were - Indrani; Divya; Chitra; and Ishika, but not necessarily in the same order...
• Pratham was Rupika's father...
• On the stage, between Bansal and the parent of Divya, there was one more parent...
• Sukanya was the next on stage after the parent of Rupali...
• Rohit was not two places after the parent of Utprerna...
• On the stage, between Adhyayan and the parent of Parvati, there was one more parent...
• The parent of Indrani was just the next on stage after a person of same sex...
• The parent of Chhavi, was standing either two places before or two places after the parent of Bhawna...

Recently, I went to watch a car racing event where only female drivers participated…

Five drivers reached the final round, and they were given marks, on the basis of the difference between errors they made, and the scoring turns they managed to take during the race…

It meant, the organisers deduct the number of errors each driver made, from the number of scoring turns she managed to take during the race, and the higher the difference, the higher the driver's marks were…

All the five girls were called on the stage, made to stand in a line, and were given the prizes…

• Akanksha managed to take 225 scoring turns and the number on her car was 195...
• Jahnavi drove the Green car and managed to take 120 scoring turns more than Sumanlata could…
• Megha, who was on the far left, had 180 written on her car, and managed to take 60 scoring turns fewer than this number…

चोरी की गिन्नियों का बंटवारा... (Division of stolen gold coins...)

इसी ब्लॉग के जरिये बने मेरे मित्र प्रकाश गोविन्द के फेसबुक स्टेटस से ली गई है यह पहेली... हालांकि इससे मिलती-जुलती कुछ पहेलियां पहले से विवेकरस्तोगी.कॉम पर उपलब्ध हैं, परन्तु इतना तो आप सभी मानेंगे, कि पहेलियां हर बार, हर रूप में नई जैसा आनन्द देती हैं... सो, मज़ा लीजिए और हल कीजिए...

सात चोरों ने राजमहल में घुसकर चोरी की और सोने की गिन्नियों से भरी थैली लेकर भाग निकले...

सैनिकों से बचते-बचाते सबसे पहले दो चोर अपने अड्डे पर पहुंचे, और मन में बेईमानी आ गई... सोचा, हम दोनों ही बांट लेते हैं, सो, गिन्नियां निकालकर दो हिस्सों में बांटने की कोशिश की, लेकिन एक गिन्नी बच गई...

इतनी ही देर में तीसरा चोर भी भागते-भागते पहुंचा और तुरन्त भांप गया, क्या चल रहा है... सो बोला, मेरा हिस्सा भी बांटो, वरना पोल खोल दूंगा... अब गिन्नियों को तीन हिस्सों में बांटा गया, लेकिन इस बार भी एक गिन्नी बच गई...

इसी दौरान चौथा चोर भी पहुंचा और बाकी साथियों की तरह गिन्नियों को चार हिस्सों में बांटे जाने की फरमाइश कर डाली, लेकिन हाय रे भाग्य... इस बार भी एक गिन्नी बच गई...

इसी तरह पांचवें के आने पर जब पांच हिस्से किए गए, तब भी आश्चर्यजनक रूप से एक गिन्नी बची, और उन सबकी हैरानी का कोई छोर न रहा, जब छठे साथी के पहुंचने पर उन्होंने गिन्नियों के छह हिस्से किए और तब भी एक गिन्नी बच गई...

आखिरकार, सातवां चोर भी अड्डे पर पहुंच गया, और सात हिस्सों में बांटने पर गिन्नियां पूरी-पूरी बंट गईं...

अब आप लोग मुझे बताइए, थैली में कम से कम कितनी गिन्नियां थीं...?

Two of the thieves ran faster, and reached their den before their accomplices, and thought of sharing the coins between themselves... But when they tried to divide the total coins into two parts, one coin remained...

In the meanwhile, the third thief reached there, and understood immediately what's happening... He asked to divide the loot into three parts, and when they tried doing that, one coin remained this time too...

Fourth thief also arrived, and demanded the same, but unfortunately, when they divided the coins in four parts, one coin remained this time too...

Very surprisingly, they tried dividing the coins into five parts, when the fifth of their partner reached to the den, and into six parts, when the sixth one came, but both the times, one coin remained...

At last, the seventh thief came, and divided gold coins into seven parts, and lo, coins were equally divided...

Now, can you guys tell me, at least how many gold coins were there in the bag...?

During winter vacations, I visited a veterinary researcher friend of mine in Bareilly's IVRI (Indian Veterinary Research Institute), where the kids - Saarthak, Jigyaasa, Ambar, Nishtha and Samagra - were given a tour of the little zoo they have...

Kids enjoyed that thoroughly, and when they came back, the youngest Samagra told me, "Bade Papa, we have seen three types of animals in the zoo... Bees had six legs each, spiders had eight legs each, and mice had four legs each..."

The five children of my family - Saarthak, Nishtha, Jigyaasa, Ambar, and Samagra - participated in a Sanskrit Mantrochchaaran (mantra recital or incantation) competition, for which five mantras - Gayatri Mantra, Maha-Mrityunjay Mantra, Praatah-kaaleen Mantra, Namokkaar Mahamantra, and Shri Ram Stuti - were chosen...

For the competition, the kids needed to recite one of the mantras five times, another four times, the third mantra needed to be recited three times, the fourth one two times, and the fifth and last mantra only once, but they needed to make sure that no two kids recite the same mantra the same number of times...

So, each of the kids needed to recite these five mantras 15 times in toto, and they were to be adjudged for their pronunciation...

Gayantri Mantra took 48 seconds in one recital; Maha-Mrityunjay Mantra 78 seconds; Praatah-kaaleen Mantra needed 88 seconds; Namokkaar Mahamantra 116 seconds; and Shri Ram Stuti took 128 seconds to finish each time its recited...

My and brother's kids - Saarthak, Nishtha, Jigyaasa & Ambar - went to a mountaneering trip, where they needed to cross a gorge between two peaks by hanging through a rope...

But the problem was, the bats who attack the people on the rope, until they are wearing an electrical jacket, which can be worn by two kids at one time...

The gorge was more than 250 meters wide, so the jacket could not be thrown back, and someone had to be back through the rope wearing the jacket, until all four of them reach safely on the other peak...

Now, if through that rope, Saarthak can reach to the other peak in 3 (three) minutes, Jigyaasa can reach there in 7 (seven) minutes, Ambar can reach there in 13 (thirteen) minutes and Nishtha can reach to the other peak in 17 (seventeen) minutes, you guys tell me, at least how long will it take all of them to reach to the other side...?

It was in the year 1965, when five countries - United States of America (USA), Republic of South Africa (SA), Republic of China, United Kingdom (UK), and Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) - sent 15 players each, to the 'Olympics for deafs and dumbs'...

The players competed in five sports, and each of the country sent five players for one of the sports, four players for the second, three for the third, two for the fourth, and only one player for the fifth sporting event...

No country sent the same number of players for any particular sport...

And yes, the countries had to pay the 'arrangements fee' to the organisers, and no two sports had the same fee charges...

For the athletics competitions, the organisers charged US Dollars 1,800 for each player participating in the sport... Likewise, for shooting, the fee was US Dollars 2,925 each player; for weight lifting, the fee was US Dollars 3,300; for swimming, US Dollars 4,350; and for gymnastics, the fee was US Dollars 4,800...

विशेष नोट : पिछले कुछ दिनों से मैं अपनी ही पुरानी पहेलियों को नए कलेवर में आपके पास लेकर आ रहा हूं, और मेरी कोशिश रहती है कि वे आपको नई पहेली जैसी ही चुनौती दें... सो, आप सभी से अनुरोध है कि मुझे ज़रूर बताएं कि मैं कामयाब रहा या नहीं...

हाल ही में मैंने पूर्व क्रिकेटर और मौजूदा कमेंटेटरों सुनील गावस्कर तथा रवि शास्त्री के साथ मिलकर एक क्रिकेट ट्रेनिंग अकादमी शुरू करने की योजना बनाई, और हमने तय किया कि प्रशिक्षकों के तौर पर चार-चार लोगों की टीमें बनाएंगे, जिनमें प्रत्येक में कम से कम एक गेंदबाज़, एक बल्लेबाज़, एक विकेटकीपर, और एक रणनीतिकार (अर्थात जो एक अच्छा कप्तान बनने के गुर सिखा सके) होना चाहिए...

अब समस्या यह थी कि हमारी अकादमी में पढ़ाने के लिए बहुत ज़्यादा खिलाड़ी उपलब्ध नहीं थे, सो हमें प्रत्येक प्रशिक्षक टीम में दो गेंदबाज़, और दो बल्लेबाज़ रखने पड़े, लेकिन हम यह सुनिश्चित करना चाहते थे कि इस प्रकार बनी चार सदस्यों वाली प्रत्येक टीम में कम से कम एक विकेटकीपर भी हो, और एक रणनीतिकार भी...

हमारी अकादमी में प्रशिक्षक बनने के लिए सहमति भेजने वालों में बिशन सिंह बेदी, हरभजन सिंह, इमरान खान, शोएब अख्तर तथा वसीम अकरम नामक गेंदबाज़ शामिल थे, जबकि बल्लेबाज़ों में हमारे पास सिर्फ चार खिलाड़ियों - इंज़माम-उल-हक, महेन्द्र सिंह धोनी, राहुल द्रविड़ तथा सचिन तेंदुलकर - की सहमति पहुंची...

हां, हरभजन सिंह, महेन्द्र सिंह धोनी, तथा राहुल द्रविड़ विकेटकीपिंग के प्रशिक्षक भी हो सकते थे, जबकि इमरान खान तथा इंज़माम-उल-हक को हमने रणनीतिकार भी माना...

परन्तु हमारी समस्याएं यहीं खत्म नहीं हुईं, क्योंकि महेन्द्र सिंह धोनी ने हरभजन सिंह के साथ एक ही टीम में रहने से साफ इंकार कर दिया, और ज़िद पकड़ ली कि वह उसी टीम में शामिल होगा, जिसमें वसीम अकरम रहेगा...

दूसरी ओर, इसी तरह इमरान खान ने राहुल द्रविड़ के साथ जाने से इंकार कर दिया, और शोएब अख्तर की ज़िद थी कि वह इंज़माम-उल-हक के साथ नहीं जाएगा...

सो, अब क्या आप लोग हमें बता पाएंगे कि हम इम शर्तों को पूरा करते हुए कुल कितनी अलग-अलग प्रशिक्षक टीमें बना सकते थे...?

I, alongwith Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri (both former cricketers and currently commentators), planned to start a cricket training academy; and for that, we planned to form the four-member trainers' teams in a way so that each of them has at least one bowler, one batsman, one wicketkeeper and one strategist (means capable of giving tips to be a captain of a side)...

But the problem was that not many players were available to teach, so, we had to form the teams with two bowlers and two batsmen each, but we wanted to make sure that at least one of the four members of a team is a wicketkeeper also and at least one of them is a strategist...

We got the consent to teach at our academy from the bowlers Bishan Singh Bedi, Harbhajan Singh, Imran Khan, Shoaib Akhtar, and Wasim Akram... And as batsmen, we had only four players - Inzamam-ul-Haq, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Rahul Dravid, and Sachin Tendulkar - available...

By the way, Harbhajan Singh, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Rahul Dravid could be the wicketkeeping trainers too; and Imran Khan and Inzamam-ul-Haq were considered as strategy teachers...

But the problems did not end here for us, as Mahendra Singh Dhoni refused to go with Harbhajan Singh, and insisted that he will be teaching at the academy only if Wasim Akram goes with him...

On the other hand, where Imran Khan refused to teach with Rahul Dravid, Shoaib Akhtar categorically refused to teach with Inzamam-ul-Haq...

Now, can you guys tell me, how many acceptable trainers' groups could we put together...?
