There was a group of two teachers (one male and one female) and four students (two boys and two girls), who went to a jungle safari, alongwith a pet Chimpanzee and his trainer... During the trip, all of them needed to cross a river, for which, like usual, there was a boat, that can hold only two persons at a time (by the way, Chimpanzee also counts as a person in this riddle)... And yes, all the four students and the Chimpanzee don't know how to operate the boat...

• To control the Chimpanzee, the trainer has to remain with him, when he is around other people...

'हनोई की मीनार' या 'ब्रह्मा की मीनार' एक गणितीय खेल या पहेली है, जिसे 'टॉवर ऑफ हनोई' (Tower of Hanoi), 'टॉवर ऑफ ब्रह्मा' (Tower of Brahma) या 'ल्यूकस टॉवर' (Lucas' Tower) भी कहा जाता है... इंटरनेट पर इस पहेली या खेल के बारे में अंग्रेज़ी में बहुत-सी जानकारी उपलब्ध है, लेकिन हिन्दी में कहीं भी विस्तार से कुछ नहीं मिला, सो, मैंने सोचा, क्यों न आपने पाठकों के लिए इस बेहद रोचक और मज़ेदार खेल के बारे में एक पोस्ट डाल दी जाए... वैसे, इंटरनेट पर इसे 'हनोई का टॉवर (Tower of Hanoi), 'ब्रह्मा का टॉवर' (Tower of Brahma) या 'लुकास टॉवर' (Lucas' Tower) के नाम से भी खोजा सकता है...

'ब्रह्मा की मीनार' (Tower of Brahma) को तीन सलाखों और अलग-अलग आकार की कुछ चपटी गोटियों (कैरम बोर्ड जैसी गोटियों) से खेला जाता है, जिन्हें सलाखों में पिरोया जा सके... पहेली की शुरुआत किसी भी एक सलाख पर सभी गोटियों को एक-दूसरे के ऊपर बढ़ते क्रम में लगाकर की जाती है (यानि सबसे छोटी गोटी सबसे ऊपर), ताकि शंकु (Cone) की आकृति मिल सके... पहेली का उद्देश्य है, सभी गोटियों को उसी आकार में अंतिम सलाख तक ले जाना, जिसके लिए कुछ शर्तों का पालन करना ज़रूरी है...

• एक बार में सिर्फ एक गोटी को स्थानांतरित किया जा सकता है...
• हर चाल में किसी भी सलाख से सबसे ऊपर मौजूद सिर्फ एक गोटी को हिलाया जा सकता है, और उसे किसी भी अन्य सलाख पर सबसे ऊपर ही रखा जा सकता है...
• किसी भी समय किसी भी गोटी को खुद से छोटे आकार की गोटी के ऊपर नहीं रखा जा सकता...

यदि आप पहेली को तीन गोटियों के साथ शुरू करते हैं, तो जीतने के लिए पहेली को सिर्फ सात चालों में खत्म करना होगा... इसी तरह यदि गोटियों की संख्या चार है, तो जीतने के लिए अधिकतम चालों की संख्या 15 होगी... यानि हर बार अधिकतम चालों की संख्या '(2 की घात n) - 1' ही रहेगी, जहां n का अर्थ गोटियों की संख्या है... 

वैसे, सलाखों और अलग-अलग आकार की गोटियां जुटाने का तामझाम काफी मुश्किल साबित हो सकता है, सो, आप लोगों की जानकारी के लिए बता देना चाहूंगा कि मैंने अलग-अलग आकार के चार ढक्कनों (बोतलों के ढक्कन) से यह खेल खुद भी खेला, और अपने बच्चों को भी सिखाया... अब तो मेरे दोनों बच्चे - सार्थक और निष्ठा - भी 15 चालों में चार ढक्कनों से बनी 'ब्रह्मा की मीनार' (Tower of Brahma) को हल कर लेते हैं... और हां, इसमें सलाखों की भी ज़रूरत नहीं पड़ी... सो, इसी तरह की मिलती-जुलती चीज़ों से आप भी इसे तैयार कर सकते हैं, और खेल सकते हैं... यकीन मानिए, बहुत आनंद आएगा...

One fine day, I and my wife Hema asked the kids to invite their teammates over to our place for dinner, so that we can also meet them...

Each of the kids invited two of his or her friends, and incidentally, each one of them received one friend from the swimming team, and the other from the roller skating team...

During the dinner, we asked them to introduce their friends to us, all of them smiled mischievously...

It meant, the organisers deduct the number of errors each driver made, from the number of scoring turns she managed to take during the race, and the higher the difference, the higher the driver's marks were…

All the five girls were called on the stage, made to stand in a line, and were given the prizes…

• Akanksha managed to take 225 scoring turns and the number on her car was 195...
• Jahnavi drove the Green car and managed to take 120 scoring turns more than Sumanlata could…

सात चोरों ने राजमहल में घुसकर चोरी की और सोने की गिन्नियों से भरी थैली लेकर भाग निकले...

सैनिकों से बचते-बचाते सबसे पहले दो चोर अपने अड्डे पर पहुंचे, और मन में बेईमानी आ गई... सोचा, हम दोनों ही बांट लेते हैं, सो, गिन्नियां निकालकर दो हिस्सों में बांटने की कोशिश की, लेकिन एक गिन्नी बच गई...

इतनी ही देर में तीसरा चोर भी भागते-भागते पहुंचा और तुरन्त भांप गया, क्या चल रहा है... सो बोला, मेरा हिस्सा भी बांटो, वरना पोल खोल दूंगा... अब गिन्नियों को तीन हिस्सों में बांटा गया, लेकिन इस बार भी एक गिन्नी बच गई...

इसी दौरान चौथा चोर भी पहुंचा और बाकी साथियों की तरह गिन्नियों को चार हिस्सों में बांटे जाने की फरमाइश कर डाली, लेकिन हाय रे भाग्य... इस बार भी एक गिन्नी बच गई...

इसी तरह पांचवें के आने पर जब पांच हिस्से किए गए, तब भी आश्चर्यजनक रूप से एक गिन्नी बची, और उन सबकी हैरानी का कोई छोर न रहा, जब छठे साथी के पहुंचने पर उन्होंने गिन्नियों के छह हिस्से किए और तब भी एक गिन्नी बच गई...

आखिरकार, सातवां चोर भी अड्डे पर पहुंच गया, और सात हिस्सों में बांटने पर गिन्नियां पूरी-पूरी बंट गईं...

In the meanwhile, the third thief reached there, and understood immediately what's happening... He asked to divide the loot into three parts, and when they tried doing that, one coin remained this time too...

Fourth thief also arrived, and demanded the same, but unfortunately, when they divided the coins in four parts, one coin remained this time too...

Very surprisingly, they tried dividing the coins into five parts, when the fifth of their partner reached to the den, and into six parts, when the sixth one came, but both the times, one coin remained...

At last, the seventh thief came, and divided gold coins into seven parts, and lo, coins were equally divided...

बच्चों को चिड़ियाघर देखने में बहुत आनंद आया, और जब वे लौटे, उनमें से सबसे छोटे समग्र ने मुझे बताया, "बड़े पापा, हमने चिड़ियाघर में तीन प्रकार के प्राणी देखे... मधुमक्खियों में से प्रत्येक की छह टांगें थीं, प्रत्येक मकड़ी की आठ टांगें थीं, और प्रत्येक चूहे की चार टांगें थीं..."

मैंने मुस्कुराते हुए कहा, "ओह... इसका मतलब तुम लोगों ने बहुत सारे प्राणी देखे..."

During winter vacations, I visited a veterinary researcher friend of mine in Bareilly's IVRI (Indian Veterinary Research Institute), where the kids - Saarthak, Jigyaasa, Ambar, Nishtha and Samagra - were given a tour of the little zoo they have...

Kids enjoyed that thoroughly, and when they came back, the youngest Samagra told me, "Bade Papa, we have seen three types of animals in the zoo... Bees had six legs each, spiders had eight legs each, and mice had four legs each..."

I said smiling, "Oh... That means you have got to see a lot of animals there..."

Samagra smiled, and said, "Yes, and the zoo has the same number of each of these animals, so, can you tell us, how many animals we have seen in total, if I tell you that we had counted 612 legs...?"

My and my brother's kids - Saarthak, Jigyaasa, Ambar & Nishtha - entertained the guests by dancing to the tunes of different item songs on the occasion of their youngest brother Samagra...
