I once bought a bagful of candies, and brought it home during the summer vacations, when all my nephews and nieces were there having great holidays...

At that point of time, there were 10 kids, in toto, at my home...

They were my son Saarthak and daughter Nishtha, my brother's daughter Jigyaasa and son Ambar, and my other nephews Lakshya, Utkarsh and Rahul, and nieces Saumya, Palak and Ananya...

Out of the five boys, Rahul was the eldest, and Ambar was the youngest... If the list is prepared agewise (from elder to younger), Utkarsh's name would be written right in the midlle of the list, after Lakshya, and before Saarthak...

In the girls, Ananya was the eldest, and Nishtha was the youngest... And in the same order as boys' list, Saumya comes at number two, Palak at third, and Jigyaasa was the fourth name...

When I started distributing the candies, my cousin (Rahul's mother) Rachna asked me give her also some of them...

I then, gave one candy to Rachna, and 20 per cent of the remaining candies in the bag to Rahul...

After that I again gave one candy to Rachna, and 20 per cent of the now remaining candies in the bag to the number two in the boys' list...

• They ran twice, and only one of them finished in the same place in both the races...
• Saarthak was never last...
• Nishtha always beat Jigyaasa...

• Saarthak finished third in at least one of the races...
• Both Jigyaasa and Nishtha had a second place...

बच्चों के कपड़ों पर डिस्काउंट... (Discount on kids' dresses...)

मैं और मेरी पत्नी हेमा बच्चों के लिए कपड़े खरीदने एक दुकान में गए...

त्योहारों के दिन चल रहे थे, सो, उन लोगों ने एक डिस्काउंट स्कीम लागू कर रखी थी...

उस स्कीम के तहत ग्राहक को खर्च किए गए प्रत्येक पूरे 100 रुपये के बदले अगली खरीद पर आधा प्रतिशत डिस्काउंट दिया जाता था...

इसका अर्थ यह था कि यदि हम लोग 1200 रुपये की कोई पोशाक खरीद लेते, तो अगली पोशाक पर हमें 6 प्रतिशत का डिस्काउंट मिलता; परंतु यदि वह पोशाक 1199 रुपये की होती, तो अगली पोशाक पर सिर्फ 5.5 प्रतिशत का ही डिस्काउंट मिलता...

इस स्कीम का अच्छा पहलू यह था कि हम जितनी बार चाहें, खरीदारी कर सकते थे...

इसका अर्थ यह था, यदि हम तीन पोशाक खरीदना चाहते, और हमें महसूस होता कि उनमें से किसी एक को पहले खरीद लेने से बाकी पर अधिकतम डिस्काउंट मिलेगा, तो हम उन्हें दो अलग-अलग खरीद के तौर पर, या चाहें तो तीन अलग-अलग खरीद के तौर पर खरीद सकते थे...

सो, मैंने और हेमा ने वहां सात पोशाकें पसंद कीं, जिनकी कीमत क्रमशः 1150 रुपये, 1200 रुपये, 1200 रुपये, 1250 रुपये, 1300 रुपये, 1300 रुपये, और 1450 रुपये थी...

अब क्या आप लोग हमें बता सकेंगे, किस तरीके से खरीदारी करने पर हमें सबसे ज़्यादा फायदा होगा...?

I and my wife Hema went to a kids' store, to buy some dresses for them...

It was festive season, and they were running a special discount scheme...

In that scheme, the customer gets a 0.5 per cent discount on every complete Rupees 100, he spends, on the next purchase...

This meant, if we buy one dress for Rupees 1200, we will get 6 per cent discount on the next one; but if we buy that dress for Rupees 1199, we will get only 5.5 per cent discount on the next one...

And the best part was, we were allowed to make as many purchases as we wanted...

It meant, if we want to buy three dresses, and we feel that buying a certain one first will get us the biggest discount on the rest, we could buy them as two purchases, or even three different purchases...

So, I and Hema chose seven dresses, costing Rupees 1150, Rupees 1200, Rupees 1200, Rupees 1250, Rupees 1300, Rupees 1300, and Rupees 1450...

Now, can you guys tell us, in which way should we make the purchases to get them at the cheapest price...?

मेले में घोंघों की दौड़... (The snail race at the fair...)

मैं और मेरा बेटा सार्थक मेला घूमने गए थे, जिसकी विशेषता थी, अन्यत्र कहीं भी अनुपलब्ध घोंघा दौड़, और उसे देखने की इच्छा सार्थक ने जताई...

मैं उस दौड़ को दोबारा देखने का कतई इच्छुक नहीं था, सो, मैंने सार्थक को टिकट दिलवाया और वह अंदर चला गया...

जब वह दौड़ देखकर बाहर लौटा, मैंने पूछा, "घोंघे सचमुच भागे भी...?"

सार्थक ने उत्तेजित स्वर में कहा, "हां पापा, चारों घोंघे भागे... संचालकों ने प्रत्येक घोंघे द्वारा तय की गई दूरी की घोषणा भी की, इसलिए मुझे मालूम है कि वे चारों मिलकर 7.11 मीटर भागे..."

अब चूंकि मैं जानता था कि बिना काग़ज़-कलम के हिसाब करने में सार्थक ज़रा कमज़ोर है, मैंने पूछा, "संचालकों ने प्रत्येक घोंघे द्वारा तय की गई अलग-अलग दूरी बताई होगी, तो तूने कुल दूरी का हिसाब कैसे लगाया...?"

सार्थक ने जवाब दिया, "मैंने चारों दूरियों को आपस में गुणा कर दिया, और जवाब 7.11 आ गया..."

मैंने कहा, "बेवकूफ, तुझे सही जवाब पाने के लिए उन दूरियों को आपस में गुणा नहीं, जमा करना चाहिए था..."

सार्थक फिर मुस्कुराया, और बोला, "आज मैंने वह भी किया था, और जवाब उससे भी यही आया..."

उसके बाद उसने मुझे चारों दूरियां बताईं, और हिसाब लगाने पर मैंने पाया, सार्थक बिल्कुल सही कह रहा था...

अब क्या आप लोग मुझे वे चारों दूरियां बता सकेंगे...?

I and my son Saarthak went to a fair, where he wanted to watch the unique snail race, about which he had heard a lot about from me...

I was not, at all, interested in it, so, I bought Saarthak a ticket and he went inside the tent to witness the snails racing with each other...

When he came out, I asked, "Did the snails really race...?"

Saarthak said excitingly, "Yes Papa, all four of them... The organisers of the race announced the distance covered by each snail, so I know, they ran 7.11 metres in total..."

Knowing that he is not very good at calculation without paper & pen, I asked him, "The organisers must have announced the distances of individual snails, how did you calculate the total distance...?"

He said, "I just multiplied all the four distances with each other, and got 7.11..."

I said, "You fool, you should have added the distances instead..."

Saarthak smiled again, "I did that too, Papa, but the result was the same..."

He then told me the four distances, and found after calculating that Saarthak was absolutely right...

Now, can you guys tell me the four distances...?
