(Friend's place and the parking problem...)

Special Note: If you succeed in solving this one, well and good; but in case, you don't, just leave a comment, and I will mail the answer to you...

I went to visit a friend of mine, in a posh locality in South Delhi, and after a long struggle for the parking space, I reached his home...

After we had had the tea and snacks, the conversation between us moved towards the parking problem in the residential colonies in the city, and I mentioned the problem I just faced...

He countered and said, it can be a routine affair for the rest of the city, but in his colony, it is not that much difficult to find parking space, as people in his colony have only three types of cars, and some of the residents don't even have one car...

He told me that:
  • All the residents of his colony do not have either Mercedes or BMW or Ferrari, that means none of them has all three cars...
  • Exactly 19 per cent of the residents do not have just one of these three cars...
  • At least 67 per cent of the residents do not have Mercedes...
  • At least 83 per cent of the residents do not have BMWs...
  • At least 73 per cent of the residents do not have Ferraris...
Now, can you guys tell me, what percentage of residents of that colony do not have any car at all...?

I once went to the metro station with my son Saarthak, and since he is very fond of escalators, he ran up and down for a few minutes on it...

When I called him, he came and told me, "Papa, when I ran up eight steps, it took me 40 seconds to reach the top; and when I ran up 15 steps, it took me 22.5 seconds to reach the top..."

When he found me listening to him attentively, he smiled and threw a question at me, "Papa, now you tell me, how many seconds did it take me to reach to the top, when I did not run up any steps at all... And also tell me, how many steps will be visible if the escalator is in stationary position...?"

Can you guys help me out...?

I promised to give him some of them daily if he behaves, and I don't receive any complaint from his school...
  • So, the first day passed, and I gave him one plus one-seventh of the remaining pencils...
  • On the second day, I gave him two plus one-seventh of the now remaining pencils...
  • This continued...
  • On the 'n'th day, the remaining 'n' pencils were given to him...

(The birthday parties trouble...)

Special Note: If you succeed in solving this one, well and good; but in case, you don't, just leave a comment, and I will mail the answer to you...

Very recently, I, my wife Hema and our offsprings Saarthak and Nishtha faced a peculiar problem, when we received invitations for two birthday bashes, and since both the parties were of quite close relatives, so, had to be attended by at least one member of my family...

Ultimately, we decided that only one of us will go to one of them, and rest of my family will attend the other one...
  • At the party, where only one of us went to, had 31 guests already...
  • Out of those 19 were females, and 12 were males...
  • Out of these 31 people, 14 were adults, and 17 were children...
  • Then the lone member of my family reached the venue, and the number of different man-woman couples possible became equal to the number of boy-girl couples possible...
So, now you guys tell me, who attended that party - I, Hema, Saarthak or Nishtha; and how many men, women, boys and girls were there, before my family member joined in...?

And yes, please note that if there were nine boys and eight girls at the party, then there would have been 72 (9x8) boy-girl couples possible...

(Kids quarrel over candies...)

All three of them got a different number of candies now, and started quarreling...

I intervened, and asked Saarthak to give as many candies to Jigyaasa and Nishtha as they already had...

When Saarthak complied, I asked Jigyaasa to give as many candies to Saarthak and Nishtha as they now had...

And when Jigyaasa also complied to my instructions, I asked Nishtha to give as many candies to Saarthak and Jigyaasa as they had at that moment...

(Saarthak, skiing, and Ashrafis...)

Saarthak and some of his friends went skiing to the Himalayas...

There, suddenly one of the friends fell and hit a rock, and while lifting him, the other friends found a bag with lots of Ashrafis (gold coins) in it...

They counted, and found that the Ashrafis were in such number that they could be divided equally between all of them...

After they had divided, one of the boys - Lalit, suggested that it would be more equitable to divide the Ashrafis by families rather than by individuals...

Now, among those friends, there were two groups with two brothers, and obviously, Lalit was not there in either of the group of brothers...

So, they divided all the Ashrafis once again, by families this time...

This re-division by families made each part having five more Ashrafis, than the each part of when they divided the Ashrafis by individuals...

But even after that, the arguements continued, and one of the boys, Alok, decided and announced that he did not want any Ashrafis at all, and Lalit also withdrew his suggestion of dividing the Ashrafis by families...

So, it was finally decided then, and the Ashrafis were distributed among all of them, except Alok, equally, by individuals, and not by families...

Now, can you guys tell me, how many boys were there in the group (by the way, they were less than 10), how many Ashrafis were there in the bag, and how many Ashrafis did each boy end up with...?

(Bought wine during the England visit...)

(Distribution of candies among kids and Rachna...)

Now, the same riddle in English...

Special Note: If you succeed in solving this one, well and good; but in case, you don't, just leave a comment, and I will mail the answer to you...

I once bought a bagful of candies, and brought it home during the summer vacations, when all my nephews and nieces were there having great holidays...

At that point of time, there were 10 kids, in toto, at my home...

They were my son Saarthak and daughter Nishtha, my brother's daughter Jigyaasa and son Ambar, and my other nephews Lakshya, Utkarsh and Rahul, and nieces Saumya, Palak and Ananya...

Out of the five boys, Rahul was the eldest, and Ambar was the youngest... If the list is prepared agewise (from elder to younger), Utkarsh's name would be written right in the midlle of the list, after Lakshya, and before Saarthak...

In the girls, Ananya was the eldest, and Nishtha was the youngest... And in the same order as boys' list, Saumya comes at number two, Palak at third, and Jigyaasa was the fourth name...

When I started distributing the candies, my cousin (Rahul's mother) Rachna asked me give her also some of them...

I then, gave one candy to Rachna, and 20 per cent of the remaining candies in the bag to Rahul...

After that I again gave one candy to Rachna, and 20 per cent of the now remaining candies in the bag to the number two in the boys' list...

Once again, I gave one candy to Rachna, and 20 per cent of the now remaining candies in the bag to the number three in the boys' list...

Fourth time also, I gave one candy to Rachna, and one-fifth of the remaining candies to the fourth boy...

Now, I gave Rachna another candy, and told her that it was the last candy for her...

And then, gave one-fifth of the remaining candies to Ambar...

Now, came the turn of the girls... And I divided the remaining candies among the girls equally...

Now, can you guys tell me the minimum number, for how many candies were there in the bag when I bought it; and how many candies did each kid and my cousin Rachna get...?

(School's annual fair, and candy-seller Saarthak...)

The annual fair of my son Saarthak's school lasted five days, where he opened a candy stall...

He bought a certain number of candies (with all the money he had) from a shop, and sold some of them the first day...

The next day, he bought some more candies, and the left over candies were doubled now, and he managed to sell the same number of candies as the previous day...

The third day, he bought more candies, and the new remainder of candies was tripled now, but he could manage to sell the same number of candies as before...

The fourth day, he bought even more candies, and the remainder of the third day was quadrupled now, but his sales were the same as the three previous days...

When he bought more candies on the fifth day, the remainder was quintupled, and that day too, he sold exactly the same number of candies as on all the previous days, but this time, his stock was completely disposed of...

Now, can you guys tell me, how many candies did he buy from the shop the first day, and how many did he sell daily... And yes, I need the smallest number...
